MSP (V) - Blue Zones Challenge 010623

The Transition Network – Minneapolis/St. Paul

2023 New Year Book Study

The Blue Zones Challenge by Dan Beuttner

What do Loma Linda, California; Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; and Nicoya, Costa Rica have in common? These five locations are the homes of the healthiest, longest living individuals in the world! Researchers have found that what the inhabitants of these places have in common is a mostly plant-based diet, moderate intake of alcohol, regular exercise, quality sleep, and strong social and spiritual connections.

Author and speaker Dan Buettner coined the term “Blue Zones” when referring to these locations. He has written six best-selling books on the subject:

  • The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest
  • Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way
  • The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World’s Healthiest People
  • The Blue Zones of Happiness
  • The Blue Zones Kitchen: 100 recipes for living to 100
  • The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-Week Plan for a Longer Life

Join us as we start out the new year, 2023, with a deep dive into Buettner’s latest book, The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-Week Plan for a Longer Life. Participants will meet, via Zoom, on Fridays, starting January 6th, for six weeks to discuss a section of the book and how we might incorporate each aspect of the Blue Zones lifestyle into our own lives.

All members will be expected to purchase their own copy of the book, as there are checklists, journaling exercises, etc. throughout the book that we will be discussing. Please note that this book study will be participant lead. All participants will be asked to assist in the leading of this group. In addition, we hope to share and come up with a list of related resources such as articles, podcasts, recipes, etc. We will meet via ZOOM from 11:00am – 12:30pm. This will, hopefully, accommodate people who work, so that they may join us over the lunch hour.

Here is a tentative schedule:

Week #1 – January 6th - Meet as a group to discuss how we will proceed, goals for the group, etc. Please join this first meeting with a copy of the book in hand.

Week #2 – January 13th - Discuss the introduction (pp. 1 -55) of the book.

Week #3 – January 20th - Discuss the “get ready” section of the book (pp. 59 -127).

Week #4 – January 27th – Discuss successes and challenges of completing Week #1.

Week #5 – February 3rd – Discuss successes and challenges of completing Week #2 and moving     forward. (Perhaps meet in person for a potluck featuring Blue Zone recipes!)

Week #6 – February 10th – Discuss “sustainability” section of the book (pp. 195 – end). Set future goals and draw conclusions.

We can’t wait to get started on creating “Blue Zones” in our own homes!
