INSPIRING WOMAN – DR. MARY CLAIRE KING

Our kickoff session will highlight the life and career of Dr. King, an extraordinary scientist and humanitarian. A geneticist who revolutionized women’s health with her discovery of the BRCA gene that causes breast cancer, Dr. King also used her knowledge of genetics to collaborate with the Argentinian “Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo” to reunite them with their lost grandchildren. Jan Blustein of the NYC Chapter will start with a basic summary of Dr. King’s achievements and will show a video of Dr. King looking back on her early career as a young scientist (and single mother). Then we’ll reflect together on what makes Dr. King so compelling, exciting and inspiring.

Our Presenter: Jan Blustein, M.D., Ph.D.

Jan is an active NYC chapter member and a recently retired Professor of Population Health and Medicine at NYU Medical School.

She enjoys making science accessible to non-scientists.
