Don't miss the sparkling first production of Opera Philadelphia's 2025-26 season, its gala fiftieth year. It marks the first season curated by the company's innovative General Director and President, Anthony Ross Costanzo, and is both a celebration of its history and a bold expression of what the future of the opera can be.
Exactly 200 years ago, the great 19th century Italian composer, Gioachino Rossini, dared to focus on the coronation of Charles X with this ebullient satire of class, manners, and the timeless misery of long-distance travel. In his long-awaited American debut, Olivier Award-winning director Damiano Michieletto transforms this showpiece into a theatrical work of art, setting the story in a present-day gallery on the cusp of opening a major exhibition. The production's rich narrative and visual palette shade Rossini's joyful musical canvas, blurring the line between life and art. Corrado Rovaris (Jack Mulroney Music Director) leads a distinguished ensemble cast featuring the luminous soprano Brenda Rae. This is an Opera Philadelphia company premiere and is performed in Italian with English supertitles.
