Anything Goes Book Club

General Information

This is a monthly club for women who enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction books. The books are chosen by the group, after soliciting, receiving, and discussing recommendations from members. Every member steps up to be the discussion leader for one of the books recommended by either themselves or another member.

Our meetings begin with the book discussion and end with a check-in from each member. This way we get to the meat of the meeting first, but we also make time to get to know and support each other. We invite you to join us every first Thursday of the month at 10:00 AM.

New members, new ideas and new opinions are always welcome. And remember, you can come for just one meeting if you are particularly interested in the book of the day.

If you are interested in participating or want to be on our contact list, 1) login and add yourself to the contact group or 2) Contact Eleni Skevas, if you need the zoom link, using the Member Directory. If not a member, please contact us.

Event Information

Twelve women from the book group met on June 5 at the Shoreview library. We had a good discussion about the book, Boys of Riverside. Many women enjoyed the book. The biggest negative feedback was related to the amount of football detail and the lack of development of the characters. We appreciated learning about the history and culture of the deaf community. Terri reminded us that the author was a journalist which could help explain what was included and what was excluded. Among the women who liked the book, none agreed with Amazon's Best Book of 2024 rating.

In the spirit of reading a book about football, we called an audible and changed our book selection for July. The book, All Fours, had been selected because it is a #1 Fiction book. However, the women who had read or started it didn't think it was a book they wanted to finish or discuss. Good reads summary was "An irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious, and surprising novel about a woman upending her life" in perimenopause. That sounds like a pretty good description. Maybe we need to find a new name for our book group since we decided we aren't really "ANYTHING GOES"!!!

Our new July 3 selection is The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride by Joe Siple. We were looking for a lighter selection for summer.

Our August 7 title remains unchanged, A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan

We discussed numerous other titles for future months, but didn't settle on any selections.

Our July meeting will again be at the Shoreview library on July 3 at 10:15-11:45. We will need to select some fall books.

Curious what books this group has read in the past? Check out the list here.

The book club is open to all members (and non-members are welcome to join us a couple times before becoming a member of our organization). It’s helpful if you’ve read the book, of course, but if you just want to listen in and test the waters without reading the book, don’t hesitate to do so. Please add yourself to the group using the instructions above on this webpage.
