Volunteers are needed to staff overnight at the Respite Shelter at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn for one night between Sunday, May 4th through Thursday, May 8th. The shelter provides a warm, safe place to sleep, along with a hot meal, for 6-8 male guests each nightly.

The Food Bank For New York City’s Community Kitchen distributes nutritious hot meals to hundreds of guests each week. Women’s Connection members will be serving lunch from 11:30am-1:30PM during the Senior Lunch Service. Senior neighbors are invited to come to the Community Kitchen to sit down and enjoy a hot meal. Volunteers are needed to welcome guests and serve these lunches in an elevated dining experience.

We hope to open many conversations through a book group that will tackle social justice themes through fiction and non-fiction titles. The Queens Central Library - Board Room
The Queens Public Library’s High School and College Readiness Team is starting a new tradition this year to celebrate Queens Public Library teens as they prepare for their post-secondary journey. The library is giving away Decision Day Kits to patrons who are pursuing college, career, a gap year, military, etc. with the supplies they may need in a new setting.
The team requests the help of volunteers to ensure the kits are packaged and mailed to the various Queens Public Library locations on time. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with the College Readiness team at the Central Library to package the kits.

Philadelphia Episcopal Church
All Women‘s Connection members are welcome to assist, as we set up the OCIYN pop-up shop. This mobile basic needs program provides free clothing, food, and access to services throughout neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Along with JFCS, volunteers assist in setting up clothing racks and tables, managing the farmer‘s market stand, helping shoppers make their selections, and checking out shoppers when they are done. If you like this activity, look for this as an on-going monthly opportunity. This will be a great opportunity for the “shoppers” to get to know you and for you to get to know them.
Please be aware that this activity requires some physical strength, removing clothes from large bags, hanging them up as well as considerable time on your feet.

This exhibit centers on the experiences of women, Indigenous communities and free and enslaved Black people. The exhibit commemorates the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution.
Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting House
The Chestnut Hill Skyspace, Greet the Light, is a permanent art installation designed by the artist James Turrell and is part of the Chestnut Hill Friends Meetinghouse. A Skyspace is a room created with an opening, or aperture, in the ceiling where viewers see the sky. There are over 90 Skyspaces around the world each unique to their surroundings and purpose. The Skyspace at the Chestnut Hill Friends Meetinghouse features cove lighting which James Turrell designed to interact with natural light creating a magical sequence that challenges our perceptions of light, color, and space. Greet the Light is timed specifically to correlate with the rising or setting of the sun, when the light in our world changes most dramatically. Every experience is different. And, as a special bonus for this evening, the lighting program will be accompanied by a musician performing on Harmonic Crystal Bowls.

We will be visiting Professor Marc Schmidt’s laboratory of Computational Neuroethology at the University of Pennsylvania. Here he studies social behavior in small groups of songbirds (brown-headed cowbirds), a socially gregarious species, in a large “smart aviary” equipped with an array of cameras, microphones and other devices with the purpose of quantifying social network properties of the group and its changing dynamics over the breeding season. This is a highly integrative research project involving a physicist, two engineering teams, and a biologist. Marc is the biologist. The long-term goal of this work is to understand how the brain processes information in naturalistic social contexts.
Note that there are two, repeated tours - one at 10 and a second at 11:30 am.
